The best bit? She LOVES wallpaper…
How did you first enter the world of design? Can you tell us about your background, education, and any pivotal career moments before launching your studio?
“I studied textile design and so I have always been fascinated by the interplay of materials, textures, and finishes. Before establishing my own studio, I honed my expertise at design houses such as Katharine Pooley Ltd and worked on international projects with leading developers like Candy & Candy. These experiences enriched my understanding of high-end, bespoke design and the importance of creating spaces that resonate emotionally with their owners. Since launching my studio, Portia Fox, my vision has continually evolved, shaped by the incredible projects and clients we’ve had the privilege to work with. What remains constant is our commitment to refined, understated luxury – blending architectural integrity with intricate detailing to create timeless interiors that feel both elegant and deeply personal.”
You founded your studio in 2017 – what have been the biggest lessons you’ve learned along the way?
“Since founding my studio in 2017, the journey has been filled with invaluable lessons – both in design and in business. One of the biggest takeaways has been the importance of adaptability. No two projects are the same, and each comes with its own challenges, whether it’s navigating complex logistics, balancing client expectations, or working with intricate architectural details. Being able to pivot, problem-solve, and remain open to creative solutions has been essential. Another key lesson is the value of relationships. Interior design is deeply collaborative, and success is built on strong connections – with clients, artisans, suppliers, and consultants. Clear communication, mutual respect, and a shared vision are what bring a project to life in the most seamless and rewarding way. Finally, I’ve learned that great design is not just about aesthetics – it’s about how a space makes you feel. Functionality, comfort, and elegance must be in harmony to create interiors that truly enhance daily life. Staying true to this philosophy has shaped the way we work and continues to inspire every project we take on.”
Where do you find inspiration for your projects? Are there any places, eras, or artistic movements that influence your work?
“Inspiration is everywhere, and I find that the most compelling designs emerge from a confluence of diverse influences. My international travels, for both business and pleasure, play a significant role in shaping my creative perspective, exposing me to different cultural aesthetics, materials, and architectural traditions. London, however, remains a constant source of inspiration. The city offers an incredibly rich architectural landscape, from stunning period properties with intricate detailing and historical charm to cutting-edge contemporary homes. This diversity allows us to work across a wide range of design styles and influences. The city’s multicultural and visionary clientele adds another exciting dimension, as each project comes with its own unique journey, personal stories, and aesthetic inspirations. This makes every design process dynamic and deeply engaging.”
How do you incorporate wallpaper into your designs? Do you have favourite brands, colours, or patterns? We especially loved the games room in your Holland Park family home!
“Thank you! In our Holland Park project, we selected a wallpaper depicting a Mediterranean garden scene from Iksel, to add depth and interest to an intimate games table setting. Positioned in the basement, the room features a large lightwell on the opposite side, where an impressive olive tree anchors the space. The wallpaper creates a seamless dialogue between these spaces, visually extending the outdoor greenery into the interior. We love incorporating wallpaper into our design schemes to introduce texture, softness (especially with fabric wallcoverings), depth, and visual intrigue. Whether opting for bold patterns to make a statement or subtle designs to craft a refined backdrop, wallpaper offers a versatile design tool. Beyond walls, we also integrate wallpaper into joinery – lining the backs of bookshelves or inset within door panels – to add unexpected layers of detail and interest.”
We’ve had the pleasure of working with you, installing ARTE, Holland & Sherry, and other luxurious wallcoverings, including woven grasses and geometric patterns. Do you find yourself naturally drawn to these timeless textures and designs?
“Absolutely! Texture plays a crucial role in our design philosophy, and wallcoverings like those from ARTE and Holland & Sherry bring such a rich, tactile quality to a space. We’re naturally drawn to timeless materials – woven grasses, intricate geometrics, and fabric wallcoverings – because they add depth, warmth, and a sense of refinement that paint alone cannot achieve. Beyond aesthetics, these textures help create a more immersive and layered environment, subtly influencing the ambience of a room. Whether we’re using them to add softness to a formal space, create intimacy in a cosy nook, or bring a tailored sophistication to joinery, they are an essential part of our approach. The Knightsbridge apartment was a fantastic example of how these materials can elevate a space, and it was a pleasure to collaborate on such a beautifully detailed project.”
What do you hope to achieve before celebrating your studio’s 10th anniversary? Any major goals, ambitions, or dream projects on the horizon?
“This year we are excited to see the culmination of 5 years of design as we approach completion of one of our largest and most complex private homes, a 30,000 square foot property in Switzerland. In 2026 we are due to complete a milestone project with the Dorchester Collection of a super exclusive set of branded residences and then 2027 should see the completion of our largest project to date designing a collection of luxurious Private Residences and all amenities also overseas. We are in the process of setting up some satellite offices in Europe and in the Middle East and also plan to bring our furniture collection which we are currently designing into the market. So all in all it feels like quite a busy 3 years ahead.”
If you had to describe your signature style in just three words, what would they be?
“Elegant, refined and bespoke.”
What’s one key piece of interior advice you think everyone should know?
“Design with intention. Every element in a space should serve a purpose – whether functional, aesthetic, or emotional. Thoughtful design isn’t just about filling a room with beautiful objects; it’s about curating an environment that enhances the way you live. From the placement of furniture to the selection of materials, consider how each choice contributes to comfort, flow, and atmosphere. When you design with intention, elegance and practicality naturally fall into place.”
Have there been any recent design trends that have caught your eye? Are there any you wish would disappear?
“We’ve noticed a renewed interest in ceiling design. Ceilings are no longer an afterthought but an integral part of a room’s identity. As colour drenching gained popularity in 2024, extending bold creativity to ceilings is the next logical step. In 2025 designers are set to embrace the ceiling as a ‘fifth wall,’ where elements like hand-painted murals, sculptural ceiling roses, and deep cornices can elevate the entire room’s aesthetic. This trend also aligns with the growing focus on personalisation in design. Clients typically seek spaces that feel curated and unique, and elaborate ceiling treatments allow for self-expression. The increasing complexity of home infrastructure further drives this trend, as designers must create visually appealing solutions to conceal functional elements like air-conditioning units and speaker grilles. By treating every surface as an opportunity for artistry, designers.”
What’s been your most challenging project to date, and how did you overcome the hurdles?
“While we have worked on several large-scale projects in London, the one we are most proud of is an exceptionally complex 7,500 sq ft residence in Chelsea. This project, which we managed from inception to the final styling details, has been one of our most challenging yet celebrated to date. We were involved in every aspect, collaborating closely with contractors and consultants, including architects, lighting and AV designers, security specialists, MEP engineers, and joiners. Our role extended beyond space planning to selecting all internal finishes and designing intricate bespoke elements such as ceiling and flooring patterns, doors, fireplaces, and custom joinery—including wardrobes, dressing rooms, TV units, bars, and display units. Additionally, we designed a range of bespoke furniture and lighting pieces specifically for this project, ensuring every detail reflected the client’s vision. Managing such an intricate scheme from concept to completion was both a challenge and a privilege, solidifying our reputation for delivering highly detailed and sophisticated designs.”
If you could collaborate with any brand, artist, or fellow designer, who would it be and why?
“Every day, we collaborate with a diverse network of makers, artisans, consultants, and specialists on projects across the UK and around the world. This collaborative approach is at the heart of our work, as forging strong professional relationships and clear communication are essential skills for any interior designer. From project managers to joiners, furniture makers to artists, it truly takes a dedicated team to bring our projects to life. We’ve had the privilege of working with some extraordinary brands and look forward to continuing these valued partnerships while expanding our network to new and exciting opportunities. Beyond our core projects, if we were to explore something new, I would love to work on a hotel scheme again. With past experience in this sector, it’s an area I haven’t revisited since establishing my own company – but one that I believe would bring great excitement and inspiration to our team.”
What does craftsmanship mean to you? How important is it to invest in pieces that stand the test of time?
“Every member of the team at Portia Fox has a deep appreciation for craftsmanship. On every project, we collaborate with British and international artisans and makers to curate custom furniture and joinery and when we’re sourcing lighting, fabrics, accessories, artwork. Craftsmanship needs to shine through in all of the spaces we create. We’re incredibly lucky that in London we have a wealth of world-class artisans, craftsmen, and makers on our doorstep.”
