THE VIP MIST COAT
It’s the key step when dealing with newly-plastered walls that will help secure a fantastic finish. Read on for your mist masterclass…
WHAT IS IT?
A mist coat is made of watered-down emulsion paint. Ideally 40-50% water, with the remaining being emulsion.
WHY DOES IT MATTER?
Freshly-plastered walls are extremely porous, meaning they are prone to absorbing water and the moisture in the paste/adhesive so the wallcovering won’t grip to the wall properly. Chances are it will not dry properly or even peel off. The mist coat has two purposes; it will help seal the plaster for you and it will also help to identify any flaws (mainly uneven plaster work) in the wall that can be rectified with a light fill. Quick tip – the clue is in the name. If the mist coat is not a ‘mist’ and is too thick, there is a good chance that it hasn’t been mixed properly. You would need to water this down in this instance.
WHAT’S THE process?
Apply one coat with a roller/brush and it will dry pretty quickly, ideally within 24 hours. Check if it needs any more filling, and do so if necessary. Sand the area down so it’s smooth, spot prime on the area you filled, and then your walls are ready for wallpapering.
